Carpal Tunnel
Carpal tunnel is one of the most common cumulative trauma nerve conditions seen in an outpatient rehabilitation setting. Frequently, patients will come in seeking conservative management to help with nighttime pain or pain with typing. Some patients present in therapy after having a carpal tunnel release and continued pain in the upper extremity limiting tight fist or return to morbid activities due to trouble weight-bearing. Is important to address the functional deficits related to carpal tunnel and to provide activity modifications to help with overall function while healing. Ergonomics and avoiding aggravating activity, including prolonged, gripping and weight-bearing on wrist during nighttime or the day can be helpful in mediating symptoms. Some exercises including tendon gliding and nerve gliding have been helpful with mediating some symptoms in addition to the use of modalities and massage to relieve soft tissue restrictions.
